A bomb that was meant for the 'Butcher of Bucha' killed one of his subordinates instead in a remote Russian town, sources say.

An explosion killed an army officer this week in a closed military town in Russia’s far east. The attack appeared to be aimed at a more senior commander known as the “Butcher of Bucha.”

Three sources familiar with the incident said the bomb went off around 9 a.m. on Tuesday in a residential building in Knyaze-Volkonskoye-1, where Major General Azatbek Omurbekov lives. He commanded Russian troops during the occupation of Bucha.

Two sources said the attacker placed the bomb in a mailbox between the first and second floors and set up a camera. But the attacker targeted the wrong entrance: a lower-ranking officer was killed in the blast, while Omurbekov was unharmed, according to the sources.

The European Union has placed sanctions on Omurbekov for his role in the massacre of civilians in the Ukrainian town of Bucha, where Russian troops are accused of killing over 400 civilians.

Neither Russia nor Ukraine has commented on the incident. Since the war began, Ukrainian intelligence agencies have targeted dozens of senior Russian military officers and Russian-appointed officials, accusing them of war crimes.

VChK-OGPU, an anonymous Telegram channel reportedly linked to Russia’s security services, said on Tuesday evening that the blast was meant to kill Omurbekov. It added that the victim was a lieutenant colonel identified only by his last name, Kuzmenko.

Sources said Omurbekov’s apartment building, mostly used by military officials, had been sealed off, and troops were patrolling the garrison.

Knyaze-Volkonskoye-1 is a small military settlement on the outskirts of Khabarovsk, in Russia’s remote far east near the Chinese border. Unlike a typical civilian town, it’s a garrison community built around a nearby army base. Access is controlled at checkpoints, and non-residents need permission to enter.

Little is known about the secret Ukrainian groups behind assassinations and attacks on military infrastructure inside Russia and in Russian-controlled areas.

Ukraine is believed to be behind the attempted assassination in February of Lieutenant General Vladimir Alekseyev, a senior Russian military official with a key role in the country’s intelligence services. Alekseyev was shot several times in the stairwell of his apartment building by an unknown gunman but survived.

Omurbekov’s profile makes him a high-value target for Ukraine’s intelligence services.

He commanded the 64th Separate Guards Motor Rifle Brigade, an elite infantry unit, during the occupation of Bucha in 2022. He is believed to be one of the bloodiest commanders to have served there. The British sanctions list accuses him of being in “direct command” of troops involved in killing civilians.

In an interview with the Russian outlet iStories, one of Omurbekov’s subordinates in Bucha said the commander routinely ordered the killing of civilians, including attacks on vehicles carrying noncombatants.

Despite overwhelming evidence, Russian officials have denied their troops killed civilians in Bucha. In a secret ceremony, Vladimir Putin awarded Omurbekov the title of Hero of the Russian Federation, the country’s highest honor. He was later transferred to the 392nd District Training Centre in Knyaze-Volkonskoye-1.

Andrei Soldatov, an expert on Russian intelligence services, said that while the bombing apparently missed its target, the fact that it happened in a remote military town shows another security failure by Russia’s FSB.

“Given the massive resources military counterintelligence has to protect personnel, this is a security lapse,” he said.

“Protecting military personnel has long been a priority for the FSB. Officers are assigned within military districts specifically to oversee their security.”
