Liverpool have sacked Arne Slot after a difficult Premier League title defence, and are now expected to turn to Andoni Iraola as his replacement. Slot has been dismissed with immediate effect. Liverpool say the decision was made with great reluctance after a review of a season overshadowed by the death of Diogo Jota, which included 19 defeats in all competitions.
With Champions League qualification secured on the final day, and the club’s leadership insisting for months that they backed the Dutch coach, the 47-year-old had expected to stay in charge.
Ibrahima Konaté is set to leave Liverpool after failing to agree a new contract.
However, Liverpool believe the team’s playing style needs to become more aggressive and proactive, and must adapt to changes in the Premier League. That vision makes it more likely that Iraola—who was appointed Bournemouth’s head coach by Richard Hughes, now Liverpool’s sporting director—will be named as Slot’s successor.
In a statement on the club’s website, the owners wrote: “It goes without saying that this was a difficult decision for us to make as a club. Arne’s contribution to Liverpool FC during his time here has been significant, meaningful, and—most importantly for supporters and ourselves—successful.
“As such, we could not be more grateful for everything he has achieved, especially because it was built on a strong work ethic, dedication, and a level of expertise that confirmed our view that he is a leader in his field.
“From the moment we first met Arne, it was clear that he is someone who doesn’t just accept responsibility—he embraces it. That was clear when he agreed to become head coach, when he led us to the Premier League title, and throughout the season just ended, when he faced major challenges and burdens.
“At the same time, we have collectively decided that change is needed for the club to keep moving forward. Again, we must stress that this decision was not taken lightly—far from it.”
The statement also praised the Dutchman for how he handled Jota’s death, saying: “He also helped guide the club through one of the most difficult periods imaginable after the loss of Diogo. The compassion and humanity he showed during that time said a great deal about him as a person.”
However, the statement continued: “Still, we have concluded that the team’s direction is best served by a change in approach. That does not lessen the work Arne has done here, or the respect we have for him. Nor is it a reflection of his abilities. Rather, it shows the need for a different path.
“Arne leaves with our gratitude, with a Premier League title to his name, and with the knowledge that he and his family will always be welcome back at Anfield.”
Slot responded to his dismissal by saying: “It’s been an amazing ride together with Liverpool. I am so grateful that we were able to win the league last season.”
Liverpool want to appoint a replacement quickly, and Iraola is available after leaving Bournemouth. The 43-year-old has interest from Milan, Bayer Leverkusen, and Crystal Palace, but has not yet decided on the next step in his impressive coaching career.
Slot led Liverpool to a record-equalling 20th league title in his first season at the club and made the transition from the Jürgen Klopp era appear seamless. Liverpool acknowledge that his dismissal seems unfair given that achievement and the way he has conducted himself during his two years in charge.
But after investing almost £450 million in new signings last summer, Liverpool’s performance declined sharply, and supporters turned against the team’s style of play in the final months.A man was detained for Diogo Jota and his brother, André Silva in Portugal last July. Liverpool might feel unlucky to have drawn Manchester City in the FA Cup and Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League, but their title defense fell apart badly. Apart from Hugo Ekitike, new signings like the £116 million Florian Wirtz and the £125 million British record signing Alexander Isak failed to deliver. Established players such as Mohamed Salah, Ibrahima Konaté, and Alexis Mac Allister saw a sharp decline in form. Problems with set pieces and open play plagued the team all season.
Salah called out Slot’s methods before leaving the club, and the head coach kept his distance from the team during their lap of honor at Anfield on the final day.
Amid unrest among fans and players, Liverpool concluded that Slot’s departure was inevitable at some point and have acted now to avoid disrupting next season. Slot’s backroom staff are also expected to leave, though the club has not yet announced their positions.
