A van driver in Kent has been praised for giving a lift to an armed police officer who was chasing a suspect.
Bodycam footage from the officer captured the moment the driver pulled over to help on June 16, shouting, “Get in the back. Get in the back.”
The officer climbed into the van and, with the sliding door still open, said, “Go, go, go! Cheers buddy. Follow that police officer.” As the driver sped off toward the suspect, the officer added, “Just go past him. Keep going past him.”
When the driver accelerated, the officer warned, “Don’t crash,” and the driver replied, “I won’t crash, sir.”
According to Kent police, the officer—carrying a large weapon—was chasing a suspect who had fled a property in Margate after an alleged serious assault and ran into a park to escape. The suspect was reportedly “close to losing patrols” until the “responsible and public-spirited driver” stepped in to help.
The footage shows the driver pulling over after overtaking the suspect, and the officer jumps out, saying, “Don’t move. Put your hands on your head.” The suspect was then arrested.
A later clip shows the officer shaking the driver’s hand and thanking him. The driver replied, “I am just glad I could be of service. That was quite exhilarating.”
Armed policing superintendent Will Lay said, “A suspect who was being relentlessly pursued and trying to evade capture came close to losing patrols in a nearby park. But our armed officers stayed committed.
“Thanks to the quick and selfless actions of this responsible and public-spirited driver, officers were able to catch this dangerous individual,” he added.
“The successful arrest might not have been possible without this member of the public and his vehicle. He should be proud of helping keep his community safe, and we are truly grateful for his assistance.”
