"An incredible club to play for": Harry Maguire eager to extend his stay at Manchester United

Harry Maguire has suggested he would like to sign a new contract with Manchester United when his current deal ends next summer, although talks about his future have not yet taken place. The club activated a one-year extension to his contract in January.

“I’m sure we’ll discuss things in the next few months—where we’re headed and whether they want to extend my stay,” the 32-year-old said. “I have my own thoughts on what I want to do, but I’d rather not share them publicly. This is an amazing club to play for, and you’d be foolish to want to leave as soon as possible. I believe a couple of clubs made enquiries or spoke with United, and they got a quick response.”

Despite United starting the season with a 1-0 loss to Arsenal, Maguire feels the team is in a stronger position now than when he joined from Leicester for £80 million in August 2019. “We’re in a good place as a club, and I’m positive about the direction under the new hierarchy, Jason Wilcox [director of football], and the manager,” he said. “Compared to six years ago, the structure behind the management has completely changed for the better.”

Maguire, who was speaking at the Manchester United Foundation Camp in Stretford, did not start in Sunday’s defeat. Matthijs de Ligt was chosen as the central defender in Ruben Amorim’s 3-4-3 formation, though Maguire came on in the 80th minute for Luke Shaw.

“Both Matthijs and I can play the central role or either side in a back three,” Maguire noted. “I’ve done it for England, and he’s done it often for the Netherlands. Competition for places is healthy across the squad. I feel like I’ve been playing really well for the club again over the last couple of years.”

In other news, United have appointed Stephen Torpey as their new academy director. He joins from Brentford, where he oversaw the restructuring of their youth system.
