A man has been arrested after a police officer was injured when a car crashed through the gates of the Russian consulate in Sydney.
Officers had approached the driver of a white SUV parked in the consulate’s driveway in the city’s eastern suburbs on Monday morning. According to police, the 39-year-old driver then allegedly drove his vehicle into the gates and onto the lawn.
Helicopter footage showed the car with its doors open and front windows smashed, stopped near a large flagpole. The man was taken to Surry Hills police station for questioning, and the car was towed around 10 a.m. as federal police investigated.
A 24-year-old constable suffered a hand injury and was treated by paramedics.
