Music mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs is requesting a $50 million bond to secure his release while awaiting sentencing in October. A jury recently cleared him of the most serious federal charges he faced earlier this month.
In a Tuesday court filing, Combs’ lawyer argued that conditions at Brooklyn’s Metropolitan Detention Center are unsafe. The filing noted that others convicted of similar prostitution-related offenses typically remain free before sentencing.
“Sean Combs shouldn’t be jailed for this conduct,” attorney Marc Agnifilo stated. “He might be the only person currently in a U.S. jail for hiring sex workers—and certainly the only one imprisoned for arranging adult male escorts for himself and his girlfriend.”
The Manhattan U.S. Attorney’s office hasn’t yet responded to requests for comment. Prosecutors maintain that Combs poses a flight risk.
The 55-year-old faces up to 10 years in prison on two counts of arranging travel for prostitution, involving girlfriends and male sex workers. Had he been convicted of racketeering or sex trafficking, the hip-hop icon could have faced life imprisonment.
After Combs’ acquittal on July 2, Agnifilo immediately sought his release on bond. However, Judge Arun Subramanian denied the request, ruling that Combs hadn’t sufficiently proven he posed no danger to others.
Combs now joins other high-profile inmates at Brooklyn’s federal detention center, including R. Kelly, Ghislaine Maxwell, and cryptocurrency fraudster Sam Bankman-Fried.
