Wallabies fired up to take on Lions, putting second Test drama behind them

Australian captain Harry Wilson says the Wallabies have moved on from last week’s disappointing loss in Melbourne and are ready to stop the British & Irish Lions from completing a series sweep in Saturday’s sold-out Sydney showdown.

However, the team has been hit by late injuries to hookers David Porecki and backup Matt Faessler during training after Thursday’s team announcement, forcing an emergency call-up for Brandon Paenga-Amosa.

Billy Pollard steps up from the bench to start, while Paenga-Amosa—nicknamed “BPA” by teammates—gets another shot at the Lions, having already faced them three times this tour with invitational sides.

Wilson admitted losing Porecki and Faessler was tough but praised Paenga-Amosa’s seamless return, noting his recent Wallabies experience and familiarity with the Lions. “He’s been around the squad for over a year and knows the Lions well—that gives him confidence,” Wilson said.

The captain acknowledged the team’s struggles early in the week but said spirits lifted dramatically by Tuesday’s training session. “We were quiet at first, but once we hit the field, the energy returned. The boys flipped a switch, and now we’re itching to get out there.”

Flanker Carlo Tizzano was dropped from the squad after picking up a knock last week and facing heavy online criticism for a controversial play in the second Test. Wilson defended his teammate, calling the backlash unfair. “It’s good for him to step back, recover, and just enjoy rugby again. This series brings a lot of pressure, and unfortunately, he’s copped too much of it.”

With Australia at risk of suffering their first Lions series whitewash in 121 years, Wilson insisted the team has been motivated throughout. “We’re fired up and want to win this for our country,” he said, acknowledging the Lions’ hunger for a clean sweep.
