Eleven suspects have been arrested in connection with the killing of a far-right activist last week, an incident that has shocked France and exposed its deep political divisions. Among those detained is a parliamentary aide to the hard-left party La France Insoumise (LFI).
Quentin Deranque, a 23-year-old mathematics student, died on Saturday from a severe brain injury. According to Lyon prosecutor Thierry Dran, he was “thrown to the ground and beaten by at least six individuals” during an incident last week.
The attack occurred while Deranque was near a protest against a university conference attended by Rima Hassan, a European parliament member for LFI. The anti-immigration group Némésis, which was protesting the conference, said Deranque had been there to protect its members and was assaulted by anti-fascist activists. Hassan and other LFI members have condemned the killing.
The case has heightened political tensions ahead of next month’s municipal elections and the 2027 presidential race, where polls suggest the far-right National Rally could achieve its best result yet.
The first wave of arrests was announced late Tuesday, with nine suspects detained. Sources told Agence France-Presse that those arrested included people suspected of participating in the violence and others accused of supporting them. Hours later, two more suspects were taken into custody: a man allegedly directly linked to the violence and his partner, suspected of helping him evade justice.
Raphaël Arnault, an LFI politician, confirmed that his parliamentary assistant was among those arrested and said the aide had “ceased all parliamentary work.”
On Wednesday, LFI evacuated its national headquarters following a bomb threat. “Police services are on site. All employees and activists are safe,” said party coordinator Manuel Bompard on social media.
As videos of the deadly confrontation circulated online, LFI leader Jean-Luc Mélenchon urged calm, warning against “incitement to take the law into one’s own hands.”
Footage broadcast by TF1 showed several people attacking three individuals on the ground, two of whom managed to escape. One witness told AFP, “People were hitting each other with iron bars.”
Némésis has blamed the killing on La Jeune Garde (Young Guard), an anti-fascist youth group co-founded by Arnault before he entered parliament. La Jeune Garde, which was dissolved in June, has denied any involvement in the “tragic events,” and Arnault called the killing “horrific.”
While the government has pointed fingers at LFI and La Jeune Garde, the Lyon prosecutor declined to comment on those claims, stating that the investigation is focused on suspected “intentional homicide” and aggravated assault.
Politicians held a minute of silence at France’s national assembly on Tuesday in memory of Deranque, and a march is planned in Lyon next Saturday in his honor.
In a post over the weekend, President Emmanuel Macron addressed the incident and called for calm. “It is essential that the perpetrators of this ignominy be prosecuted, brought to justice and convicted.
