One person has died and five others were injured in a shooting at a rave in northern Switzerland, according to local police on Sunday.

“The search for the suspects, whose identities are not yet known, is ongoing,” they said on X, adding that the motives and exact details of what happened are still unclear.

The incident took place in Aarau, west of Zurich, and prompted a “large-scale” police response, officers said on X.

Swiss newspaper Blick reported on its website that the shots were fired before 3am on the sidelines of the Aarauer Rave.

Around 3,500 people attended the annual techno event, which ran from 3pm on Saturday to 2am on Sunday.

Police spokesperson Vanessa Rumpold was quoted as telling the newspaper that the shooting occurred at the racecourse where the event was held.

“Several shots were fired within a large group of people,” she added.
