Liverpool’s finances have received a boost ahead of a possible move for Alexander Isak after Luis Díaz completed his £65.5 million transfer to Bayern Munich.
The Colombian winger, who turns 29 in January, signed a four-year deal with the German champions, including an option for an extra year. Liverpool accepted Bayern’s improved offer, which they considered fair value for the player. Díaz had expressed his desire to leave the Premier League champions and departed their pre-season camp in Tokyo to finalize the move.
Although Díaz had wanted to leave last summer, Liverpool held firm during Arne Slot’s first season as head coach. The club later tried to renew his contract, set to expire in 2027, but with no agreement in sight and Bayern increasing their offer with achievable add-ons, Liverpool reluctantly agreed to sell. Díaz played a crucial role in Liverpool’s 20th league title win last season, scoring 17 goals in all competitions.
This transfer makes Díaz Bayern’s third-most expensive signing, behind Harry Kane and Lucas Hernández, and Liverpool’s third-biggest sale, after Philippe Coutinho and Luis Suárez, who both joined Barcelona.
In an emotional Instagram post, Díaz reflected on his time at Anfield: “Three and a half years that I’ll treasure forever. I arrived with all the dreams in the world and leave proud of everything we achieved together. I’ve met incredible people, amazing teammates, coaches who helped me grow, and extraordinary fans. Liverpool is truly a special club, and I’ll carry everyone in my heart.”
He also paid tribute to former teammate Diogo Jota, who tragically died in a car accident earlier this month: “It would have been the perfect goodbye if we hadn’t lost one of our own in such a heartbreaking way. As I said, I carry everyone with me, but one in particular—Diogo. I’ll never forget him. We’ll never forget him. Thank you for everything. YNWA.”
Liverpool initially paid £37.5 million (€45m) for Díaz in January 2022, with potential add-ons of £12.5 million (€15m). Only £3.3 million (€4m) of those bonuses were activated, and with Porto having no sell-on clause, Liverpool will make a £22 million (€26m) profit on the deal.
Díaz’s departure brings Liverpool’s total player sales under sporting director Richard Hughes to over £190 million since June 2024. Despite spending nearly £300 million this summer, the club remains interested in Isak if Newcastle show willingness to sell.
A British record fee would likely be required to sign the Swedish striker, who is reportedly keen on the move. Liverpool could fund the deal with potential sales of Darwin Núñez, Harvey Elliott, Tyler Morton, and Ben Doak this summer.
