At least 12 people have died in and around Kyiv overnight, as Ukraine’s capital faced a sixth straight night of Russian drone and missile attacks aimed at destroying infrastructure and weakening the city’s morale. Eight of the deaths were reported in Kyiv, including seven at a railway depot on the city’s left bank, with four more in the surrounding region. The attacks followed hours of air alerts that peaked with a wave of strikes around 2:30am.
Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, said the assault involved “a significant number of jet-powered drones and ballistic missiles,” and that Russia was exploiting a shortage of US-made Patriot interceptors.
In a morning post on social media, Zelenskyy said: “Russia always plans its strikes to cause as much destruction to people’s lives as possible, and it succeeds only when air defence capabilities are insufficient.”

Ukraine is trying to secure a stockpile of about 300 interceptors for the winter, funded by European allies, under a supply deal agreed with the US.
Moscow appears to be trying to exploit the gap in air defence capability before winter, as the conflict remains nearly deadlocked on the frontline. Ukraine has responded by striking oil refineries, warehouses, and other military targets deep inside Russia, aiming to damage the country’s economy.
