The US turns 250 and Taylor Swift gets married. Let’s be honest — we all know which one matters more.

In the age of comment sections, there’s one ironclad rule: you can’t write about any celebrity without someone chiming in with a dismissive “Who?” Did I say someone? Sorry, I meant some guy. Strangely, you never see a “Who?” under sports articles. It’s almost like those commenters understand that loudly claiming ignorance about Ousmane Dembélé isn’t a flex—and could earn them a painful wedgie.

I’m looking forward to seeing my first “Who?” about Taylor Swift when she marries Travis Kelce—which is happening today in New York, in case you hadn’t heard. Of course, Miss Americana and her NFL star fiancé are tying the knot over the Fourth of July weekend. And not just any Fourth of July, but the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, drafted by Thomas Jefferson. (I know: who?)

But honestly, Swift might be the one female star who has broken through that fake ignorance. Think of her as a who-nicorn. Not knowing who she is would be like not knowing about a G7 country. During her record-breaking Eras tour a couple of years ago, she moved beyond being just a pop star and started to feel like a traveling mercantile city-state. So it makes perfect sense to read reports that her and Travis’s wedding planners have built a castle inside Madison Square Garden (which will host at least part of the celebration). I like to imagine this temporary structure less as a Disney-style fairy-tale castle and more as an unconquerable medieval fortress. Sure, it’ll be taken down after the party—but it’s basically Mont-Saint-Michel, undefeated throughout the Hundred Years’ War. This castle can handle anything.

When news broke last month that Madison Square Garden might be the wedding venue, it seemed hard to believe—a bit like getting married at the office. Yet, within the world Swift has created for herself, it also feels completely normal. It’s perfect for a bride who probably cares a little about place card calligraphy and the difference between warm white and ivory, but ultimately has to prioritize a no-fly zone.

Inevitably, the wedding has sparked more theories and conspiracy theories than the Kennedy assassination. No artist has turned fandom into detective work quite like Swift. She can’t drop a napkin—let alone a lyric—without sending millions of people into a frenzy, analyzing it like Metternich analyzing Talleyrand’s death. Yes, but what did she mean by that? So it’s fitting that her wedding plans are the peak of all this. Of course, they include decoys. How could a Swiftian event not have playful references, clues, Easter eggs, and misdirections for fans to decode? And as always with Swift, that tension between revealing and teasing has fueled a media frenzy far bigger than if the couple had just shared a simple plan and asked for privacy.

Then again, maybe their post-privacy version of privacy is exactly what they’ve achieved. There’s still no clarity on what’s actually happening in New York, aside from more road closures. It involves huge numbers of people working around the clock, yet it remains a state secret. If the Manhattan Project did weddings…Taking a break from music. Even as I write this, it’s still totally unclear what’s actually going on—whether there was a small private wedding beforehand and this was just a celebration afterward, whether the venue was big enough to let some superfans in for a peek, or whether (and this is a big storyline) heavily rumored former best friend Blake Lively would be a bridesmaid or even show up at all. The whole thing has been an incredible feat of keeping information under wraps, especially for an event that reportedly involves multiple A-list guests, several side events, and takes place right in the middle of Manhattan. To put it in perspective, this celebrity wedding is officially more secure than last year’s US operation to bomb Houthi targets in Yemen—remember how a journalist was added to the top-level group chat by the then national security adviser? So amateur. Taylor would never.

In the end, even if fans are left on the outside looking in, Swift will find a way to make it feel like it’s for them. As we know, her incredible success comes from being a woman who’s in a league of her own, yet still feels like the most relatable person on the planet to her huge audience.

And as a natural storyteller, Swift has had an amazing narrative run, the kind only matched in modern times by the Marvel Cinematic Universe (now mostly stalled) and the Maga movement (please, God, etc.). Her wedding gives fans the satisfying story ending they want—or, for the more extreme corners of her fandom, the one they feel entitled to. Hey, she’s a people pleaser. From early in her career, Swift has cast herself as the heroine in her romantic ups and downs—and like all great romantic comedies, from Shakespeare to the big screen, this one ends in marriage. I’m sure she’d hate for anyone to label this weekend a happy ending—so let’s call it her new beginning era instead.
