A French off-duty police officer detained a man on Monday after he attacked and wounded three women with two kitchen knives in Paris.
The attack happened around 11:30 a.m. (0930 GMT) in the Porte de Clichy area in the north of the capital. Interior Minister Laurent Nuรฑez said three women, aged 19, 24, and 36, were taken to the hospital.
Two of them were seriously injured but not in life-threatening danger, Nuรฑez added. One was wounded in the lower back, the other in the abdomen.
Geoffroy Boulard, the mayor of the 17th arrondissement in northwest Paris where the stabbings took place, said on X that one of the three women was pregnant.
“The attacker was caught by an off-duty police officer,” Nuรฑez said.
Kheira Dellabed, 54, said she was washing dishes when the stabbing happened. “We saw a man walk by with two knives and stab three people,” the waitress said. “Then a young man with a small suitcase hit him with his bag, knocking him to the ground.” A waiter from a nearby restaurant then put a chair “on him.”
The suspect’s identity and motive were not immediately clear. Nuรฑez said he had made “incoherent statements,” but warned against jumping to conclusions about his motives.
On Saturday, an Islamist radical drove a rented minivan into a Pride parade in Berlin, killing one woman and injuring 29 others.
