In the film Forrest Gump, Tom Hanks’s character receives the Congressional Medal of Honor from President Lyndon B. Johnson. In real life, however, it seems Hanks will not be receiving another military honor.
The West Point Association of Graduates announced in May that it would award Hanks, a two-time Oscar winner, with its 2025 Sylvanus Thayer Award. This honor recognizes an “outstanding citizen of the United States whose service and accomplishments in the national interest reflect personal dedication to the ideals expressed in West Point’s motto: ‘Duty, Honor, Country.’”
But now, just weeks before the ceremony was scheduled, the association has canceled the event, according to a report in the Washington Post.
In an email to faculty, retired Colonel Mark Bieger explained that the decision allows the academy to “continue its focus on its core mission of preparing cadets to lead, fight, and win as officers in the world’s most lethal force, the United States Army.”
Beyond his acclaimed acting career, Hanks has served as national spokesperson for the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C., and supported the late Republican Senator Bob Dole’s fundraising efforts for the Dwight D. Eisenhower Memorial, as noted in the association’s original announcement.
It is unclear how honoring Hanks would interfere with “preparing cadets,” but the actor has donated to Democratic causes, received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from Barack Obama, and endorsed Joe Biden in the 2020 presidential election.
Since returning to office, Donald Trump has taken numerous actions against those he perceives as opponents. These include revoking security clearances and access for individuals in the Biden administration and former members of his own administration whom he deemed “bad” or “disloyal.” He has also blocked certain news organizations from the Pentagon workspace and White House press pool, and revoked security clearances for—and investigated—law firms he described as “very, very dishonest.”
