A French skydiving plane crashed near Nancy, reportedly killing all 11 people on board.

A skydiving plane crashed in northeastern France, killing all 11 people on board, according to the local prefect. The plane, operated by a parachuting school, went down near Nancy at 11am, said Yves Séguy, the prefect of the Meurthe-et-Moselle region. The prefecture reported that the pilot and 10 passengers—five students and five instructors—died in the crash.

Séguy explained that the plane malfunctioned and “fell almost vertically” after taking off from Nancy-Essey airfield, on the outskirts of Nancy. He stated, “The plane, which was carrying 11 people, suddenly crashed right next to the airfield. There were no other victims.” The crash occurred on the edge of a built-up area near the airfield, he told broadcaster BFMTV. “If it had happened just a few dozen meters away, the accident could have caused additional casualties,” Séguy added.

Emergency services responded immediately, and authorities are collecting witness statements, he said. French interior minister Laurent Nuñez was on his way to the scene, according to his staff.
