At least 37 people have died after a Russian drone hit a warehouse near Kyiv’s western outskirts, where explosive materials were being stored. The strike damaged at least 50 residential buildings, including a care home for elderly and disabled people, and triggered a massive fire and explosions in the Bucha district of the Kyiv region. The regional governor, Tymur Tkachenko, reported that 42 more people, including four children, were injured in the attack.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said more than 370 people had been evacuated from the area, with efforts still ongoing. In a statement, he confirmed that a warehouse in the town of Myla was struck, followed by a detonation. He explained in a video address that the warehouse belonged to the Ukrainian military and held shells, drones, and other munitions. “The first impact hit a place where ammunition was being stored, which absolutely should not have been there—a depot of the defence forces. There was a large-scale detonation of shells, mines, other munitions, and drones,” Zelenskyy said. He added that criminal proceedings had been launched on charges of official negligence. “There are regulations in place; ammunition cannot be stored near homes or other residential areas.”
He also noted that one of the deceased was Taras Didych, the head of the Dmytrivka community, who died while helping others escape.
Ukrainian prosecutors said they had opened an investigation into whether the storage of explosive objects and materials was legal. Prime Minister Serhii Koretskyi expressed regret that lessons had not been learned from a previous deadly strike on a munitions depot in Vyshneve, near Kyiv, in July. That incident killed 22 people and caused fires that damaged nearby homes. An investigation found serious failings by a state-owned company, which ignored rules about how close residential buildings could be to such sites.
“Unfortunately, we can already see that the terrible tragedy in Vyshneve did not become a lesson,” Koretskyi said. “In the fifth year of a full-scale invasion, making the same mistakes is criminal negligence. And all those responsible, without exception, must be severely punished so that such situations do not happen again.”
In a statement, Russia’s defence ministry said it had struck a warehouse in Myla that stored components and launch boosters for long-range drones. It also claimed attacks on the ports of Mykolaiv and Izmail, as well as a logistics centre and warehouse facilities in the Kyiv region that held parts for Ukraine’s Flamingo cruise missiles.
Elsewhere, Russian attacks across Ukraine’s southern Kherson region killed two people and wounded 27 others on Saturday, including a child, according to a local official.
