Liverpool have agreed a deal worth €53 million (£46.3 million) plus bonuses with Saudi club Al-Hilal for Darwin Núñez. The Uruguayan striker is set to complete his move to the Saudi Pro League once personal terms are finalized.
Núñez had been keen on a move to Saudi Arabia in January, when Liverpool turned down a £60 million offer from Al-Nassr as they focused on their Premier League title challenge. The player and his representatives made it clear they wanted a transfer this summer.
Although Núñez played a role in Liverpool’s title-winning campaign, he started just eight league games last season and found it difficult to adapt to manager Arne Slot’s system.
Liverpool had hoped to get £60 million for the 26-year-old and previously rejected an offer from Napoli. The Reds initially paid £65 million to sign him from Benfica in 2022, with potential add-ons pushing the total to a club-record £85 million. Despite being a fan favorite, he failed to fully deliver under either Slot or former manager Jürgen Klopp.
If Núñez completes his move to Al-Hilal, Liverpool will look to sign another forward. Their £110 million bid (plus add-ons) for Newcastle’s Alexander Isak remains under consideration. Any replacement for Núñez—who follows Diogo Jota and Luis Díaz in leaving the title-winning squad—must be a proven starter and represent good value.
Liverpool have spent nearly £300 million this summer (including add-ons), but the Núñez sale would take their total income since summer 2024 to £251 million. Harvey Elliott and Federico Chiesa could also be sold before the transfer window closes on September 1.
