Authorities in a coastal suburb of Naples have seized umbrellas, loungers, and deck chairs during a dawn raid on a beach. The operation aims to stop the growing trend of people trying to reserve the best spots overnight.
Torre del Greco’s port authority said coastguard staff and local police collected 40 items as part of a national beach and lake safety operation. This targets people the Italian press calls furbetti dell’ombrellone, or “umbrella cheaters.”
The port authority said the sweep took place at Laghetto, a popular free-access beach—unlike the private concessions that cover much of Italy’s coastline in summer. It followed many complaints about equipment being left unattended for days.
The operation found “unattended chairs, umbrellas, and small tables that were constantly occupying the beach, effectively saving a spot for the owners to return to.”
“This practice happens every summer, but it is clearly banned,” the port authority said. “Occupying the beach this way breaks the rules for managing public maritime areas.”
Anyone leaving beach equipment out after sunset risks fines of up to €500 (£425). Getting confiscated belongings back involves a lot of paperwork.
A similar crackdown happened on a beach in Puglia earlier this month, as well as in Liguria and Sardinia.
Italian beachgoers are fighting to reclaim “free beaches” from private concessions, which are especially common in Liguria, Emilia-Romagna, and Puglia.
One such battle was recently won in Bacoli, near Naples. The town said it aims to make more than 80% of the local coastline free or equipped for public use.
