Trump is threatening to impose a 100% tariff on European countries that put a digital tax in place.

Donald Trump has threatened to impose a 100% import tariff on any European country that introduces a tax on digital services provided by US companies.

Writing on Truth Social on Friday, the US president said that “numerous European countries” had been discussing a digital services tax on American firms, and that “some of these countries are close to actually doing this”.

“Please let this statement serve to represent that any country that imposes such a tax will immediately be met with a 100% TARIFF on any and all Goods sent to the United States of America,” Trump continued.

He added that the tariff would take effect right away and override any previous trade agreements with that country.

This threat could spark another chapter in Trump’s global trade war, where he has already placed steep tariffs on multiple countries and economic blocs at once. If Trump follows through, it could trigger a larger trade conflict between the US and the EU, especially if the 27-country bloc feels the need to retaliate.

A survey shows UK taxpayers want higher taxes on big tech companies.

France, Spain, and Italy already impose a 3% digital services tax on large companies operating in their countries, and several other EU nations have either introduced or proposed similar measures.

The UK has a 2% digital services tax that applies to social media platforms, major search engines, and online marketplaces. It targets companies with global digital services revenue over £500 million, UK revenue over £25 million, and that “derive value” from UK users.

This tax affects US tech giants like Apple, Google, and Amazon, and raised more than £800 million in 2024-2025, according to the UK Treasury.

An EU spokesperson said the bloc reserves the right to defend itself against such tariffs.

“Unilateral measures targeting such legitimate policies are unjustified. If pursued, the EU will respond swiftly and decisively to defend its rights and regulatory autonomy,” said Olof Gill, a spokesperson for the European Commission.

Gill added that digital services taxes do not specifically target companies from any one country and apply to “all large companies, regardless of their origin”.

Trump has repeatedly criticized countries that try to tax or regulate US tech companies. He has previously threatened to impose tariffs on any country that does so.

In April, Trump said the UK could face a “big tariff” for what he described as targeting US companies with taxes.

“They think they’re going to make an easy buck, that’s why they’ve all taken advantage of our country,” Trump said in April.

Trump’s threats come as his July 4 deadline for the EU and US to start implementing a tariff deal approaches. In May, the EU signed a trade deal with the US that caps most tariffs on EU imports at 15% – an agreement reached after months of tension and negotiation.

Digital services taxes were not part of that deal and remain a sticking point in trade talks.
