Goodbye, Pilates princess – hello, gym goblin: how the just-rolled-out-of-bed look took over fitness.

At first, the goblins came for our downtime. Going “goblin mode” was something you did at home—mostly in bed. The “comforts of depravity” it brought (like watching 90 Day Fiancé on mute while endlessly scrolling through social media, or pouring the last bits of a chip bag into your mouth) weren’t exactly compatible with getting anything done.

Enter the gym goblin. The look is pretty similar—think old T-shirts, worn-out socks, oversized cardigans—but the setting has changed. Fans of goblincore are getting up from unmade beds, Diet Cokes in hand, to hit the treadmill. It’s like Diana, Princess of Wales’s oversized college sweatshirts meets Josh O’Connor’s half-tracksuit look from the Disclosure Day press tour. And it’s the complete opposite of the matcha-drinking, Lululemon-wearing “clean girl” aesthetic that dominates fitness culture.

When Harry Styles was photographed for the spring 2026 issue of Runner’s World, it’s telling that stylist Harry Lambert chose secondhand trainers and a vintage Adidas T-shirt to go with retro-style track jackets and shorts for the singer. And let’s not forget the vintage Donald Duck cap, complete with a beak-shaped peak—very “I found this on my bedroom floor.” Elsewhere, Jennifer Lawrence was spotted last month leaving her house in a vintage Mickey Mouse T-shirt, paired with red track pants and Adidas sliders—a look that less fashion-forward people might only wear on lazy days in bed.

Gym goblins may have accepted the need to go further than the nearest corner shop, but they’re not about to adopt the highly optimized athleisure wardrobe or wellness-focused mindset of “that girl”—a vanilla mix of self-care and self-improvement. To show their more laid-back approach, vintage gear is key. Earlier this month, the Financial Times reported that between December 2025 and March this year, eBay searches for “vintage sportswear” and “90s sportswear” both went up 300%, while searches for “90s Reebok” jumped 700%.

Secondhand clothing retailer Rokit also reports strong growth in sales of brands like Puma and Onitsuka Tiger, along with a rise in popularity of low-profile trainers and the wider Y2K aesthetic. “Sports jersey sales have climbed dramatically in recent years, helped by England’s success in international tournaments and Gen Z’s love of creative, contrasting styles,” says Rokit’s creative director, Eibhleann McMahon. “We’ve seen a surge in demand for polos, track tops, and sports shorts. Add to that the continued growth of streetwear and performance trends like gorpcore [fashion’s interest in outdoor brands] and technical mountain wear, and sportswear has become a solid part of modern fashion.”

With Adidas track pants now “a fashion girl staple,” switching to similar retro-style running shorts during the summer feels almost natural. Early adopter Zoë Kravitz has been pairing hers with a Black History Month T-shirt. And while a lot of attention was on Carolyn Bessette Kennedy’s minimalist 90s style in Ryan Murphy’s TV hit Love Story, fashion points also went to JFK Jr. for his backwards baseball caps, casual sweaters, and relaxed sports shorts. Heated Rivalry’s hockey jerseys and Rivals’ sexed-up Golden Gauntlet competition might also be credited with sparking a sportswear revival in recent months. We’ve spent years in the era of matching activewear sets. Now, there’s a growing desire to wear something more authentic and unique.

Elsewhere, Instagram vintage resale shop Rummage Stretch has gained 12,000 followers by posting what could be called gym-goblin inspiration: leopard-print cami tops paired with capri leggings; Samantha Jones from Sex and the City in head-to-toe orange at a yoga class; Hilary Swank in a grey T-shirt from 1994’s The Next Karate Kid.

Dallas-based stylist Mikaela Adams says the rising interest in vintage sportswear might come from people wanting more individuality in their workout clothes. “We’ve spent years in the era of matching activewear sets and the ‘pilates princess’ look. There’s a growing desire to wear something that feels more personally authentic and unique.”

Meanwhile, the goblin mindset still puts comfort and practicality first. “Many of these pieces were made to move, sweat, and train in, so they work just as well for a workout as they do for running errands, grabbing coffee, or working remotely,” says Adams.

This trend has been making its way into the gym itself—and even into yoga, barre, and pilates classes, where color-coordinated gym sets were once most common.

“We’ve seen a clear shift away from highly curated, matching sets,” says Holly Evans, teacher-training manager and instructor at the yoga studio chain MoreYoga. “There’s a growing appetite for nostalgic references, whether that’s 1970s track-and-field styles, 1980s aerobics influences, or the oversized sportswear looks from the 1990s. People are swapping sculpting leggings for retro running shorts, looser joggers, and relaxed-fit flares.”

But what does getting tired of the pilates princess look mean for the future of fitness—and can chaotic goblin-style hedonism ever really fit with the world of macros and supersets?

For Evans, the two aren’t necessarily in conflict. Instead, the shift reflects positive changes in the industry itself. “Fitness has become more diverse,” she says. “As people move between yoga, pilates, strength training, walking, and social sports, they’re choosing clothes that work for multiple activities.” At the same time, rewearing existing pieces fits with a broader move toward sustainability and mindful spending. “When people feel less pressure to wear expensive or trendy activewear, yoga becomes more accessible and welcoming. It reinforces the idea that participation matters more than presentation.”
